The Ateneo de Manila in the Philippines is one of the oldest Jesuit higher learning institutions in Asia. It traces its roots to 1859 when the City of Manila entrusted the administration of the Escuela Municipal de Manila (in Intramuros) to the Jesuit Fathers. The Fathers expanded the primary school curriculum of the Escuela Municipal to include a five-year program leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. In keeping with its new academic status, The school was renamed Ateneo Municipal de Manila.

The City of Manila withdrew its subsidy to the school in 1901, and the Ateneo officially became a private institution. With this, it changed its name to Ateneo de Manila (its current name). The spirit of excellence embodied by the Ateneo’s inspiring namesake, the Atheneum in ancient Rome, is reflected in its growth into an active, fully accredited, and much-esteemed University with a grade school, high school, and undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts, sciences, law, management, education, and government.

One of the largest and longest-established units in the Ateneo de Manila community is its Loyola Schools. The campus houses the undergraduate programs of the University. The Loyola schools aim to form productive citizens in both national and international contexts. This, while securely rooted in their native culture, proactive within the global culture, imbued with the scientific spirit and the values of professionalism, and strongly committed to a faith that does justice.

The Ateneo’s motto is Lux in Domino, meaning “Light in the Lord”.

The seal is defined by two semi-circular ribbons. The crown (top) ribbon contains the school motto, “Lux-in-Domino”, while the base (bottom) ribbon contains the school name, “Ateneo de Manila”. These ribbons define a circular field on which rests the shield of Loyola: a combination of the arms of the paternal and maternal sides of the family of St. Ignatius. It bears the letters IHS, the first three letters of the Holy Name of Jesus in Greek. Above the shield is a Basque sunburst, referring to the Basque roots and heritage of Ignatius.

The seal’s colors are blue, white, red, and gold. In traditional heraldry, white or silver (Argent) represents a commitment to peace and truth. Blue (Azure) represents fortitude and loyalty. Red (Gules) represents martyrdom, sacrifice, and strength. Gold (Or) represents nobility and generosity.

Ateneans value symbols of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Maria Purissima, Queen of the Ateneo. Among them are the rosary in the pocket, the “October Medal” (the Miraculous Medal of the Immaculate Conception with a blue ribbon), and the graduation hymn, “A Song for Mary.”

Those who cannot be in the Philippines to take the Ateneo College Entrance Test (ACET) may replace it with the Scholastic Aptitude Test I (SAT I). Applicants who will take the SAT I in lieu of the ACET must submit a photocopy of the official SAT I results together with all the other requirements.

SAT I must have been taken within the last two years prior to application.

No financial aid is granted to foreign applicants.

ATENEO FRESHMAN MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

The Ateneo Freshman Merit Scholarship is an academic distinction awarded yearly to 30 outstanding incoming freshman students who have excelled in the Ateneo College Entrance Test, who have distinguished themselves in their respective high schools, and who also show great promise for the future. In recognizing their excellence, Ateneo de Manila acknowledges their potential for even greater achievement not only in academics but also in the service of God and nation. This award includes a full tuition fee grant for any undergraduate degree.

SAN IGNACIO DE LOYOLA MERIT SCHOLARSHIP
FOR PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

This award is given to the top ten (10) Loyola Schools freshman examinees coming from public or state-supported schools all over the Philippines. These students must have distinguished themselves in both their academics and extra-curricular involvement in their respective high schools. More importantly, these students must have shown the potential to become catalysts for national development and future leaders of our country. This award includes a full tuition and fees grant for any undergraduate degree.

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Depending on the availability of funds, accepted Valedictorians and Salutatorians from Jesuit and science high schools nationwide may be granted an academic scholarship upon the presentation of an official certification from the high school principal. Valedictorians are awarded a 100% tuition and fees scholarship while Salutatorians receive a 50% tuition and fees scholarship. Those from science high schools are required to pursue an undergraduate program of study under the School of Science and Engineering.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS

The Athletic Scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who have the potential to excel in athletics while maintaining good academic standing. Applicants must meet the following criteria: outstanding athletic ability, recipient of awards and achievements in the sport, financially-challenged.

FACILITIES

The campus features various facilities and amenities designed to give full and value-added support to the rigorous learning environment of the Ateneo. A major facility on campus is the Rizal Library that houses an array of local and foreign books, a growing CD collection which students can use for research projects, the Japanese Language Collection, American Historical Collection (AHC), Library of Women’s Writings (ALIWW), rare Filipiniana materials and Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) microfiches, which one can browse using the electronic card catalog. There are also computer terminals, laboratory facilities in various departments, audio-visual and conference rooms, and two residence halls, Cervini Hall for male students and Eliazo Hall for female students which are located in one of the highest points on campus. They have study halls, a cafeteria, a swimming pool, a recreation area, and a chapel. Basic services are offered by two health clinics, several cafeterias and food stalls, photocopying services, numerous phone booths, and ATMs. There is also a Social Development Complex, which houses offices and organizations dedicated to cultural and community development and service.
