Miriam College graduates have distinguished themselves in various professions. Several have been cabinet secretaries, legislators, accomplished businesswomen, entrepreneurs, educators and leaders of government and non-government organizations. To date, nineteen alumnae have been selected as “The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service” (TOWNS) awardees.
To meet the challenges of the times, Miriam College has expanded its course offerings and set up four centers for curriculum development, research and community outreach: Environmental Studies Institute, Center for Peace Education, Women and Gender Institute, and Institutional Network for Social Action.
Miriam College has other significant accomplishments in its rich history:
– Established the first school-based women’s institutions, namely the Women’s Resource and Research Center in 1987 and the Women and Gender Institute in 1998;
– The first school to offer a degree program in Environmental Planning that was launched in 1978;
– The first school to establish a Center for Peace Education in 1997;
– Established Consortium of Women’s Colleges together with Assumption College, College of the Holy Spirit, St. Paul University-Quezon City and St. Scholastica’s College in 2001;
– 100 percent passing rate in the Licensure Examination for Teachers and Social Workers; and
– One of the first batch of eleven (11) higher education institutions (HEI) in NCR granted Full Autonomy Status by the CHED in 2001.
Miriam College began in 1926 when the Archbishop of Manila requested the Sisters of the Maryknoll Congregation based in New York, USA to establish a teacher-training school for young, Catholic, Filipino women. An old Augustinian Convent in Malabon, Rizal was initially converted into the Malabon Normal School. The school transferred sites several times until finally in 1952, with its name changed to Maryknoll College, it laid down its permanent roots in Diliman, Quezon City.
Maryknoll College expanded its programs from training teachers to becoming a liberal arts college that formed women leaders. After Vatican II, the Maryknoll congregation decided to focus their efforts on their missionary work worldwide. In 1977, the ownership and management of the school was turned over to lay administrators. In accordance with this agreement, the school was re-named Miriam College in 1989.
Miriam College accepted male students in collegiate courses during the 1990s.
